Orofacial Myology

Supporting Oral Function, Breathing & Development

At Day by Day Early Intervention, we offer orofacial myology an evidence-informed therapy approach focused on the muscles of the face, mouth, and jaw. These muscles play a critical role in how children breathe, eat, speak, and grow. When patterns aren’t functioning optimally, it can impact everything from speech clarity to sleep quality and dental development.

Our goal is to support strong, coordinated, and functional oral muscle patterns that set children up for long-term success.

What is Orofacial Myology?

Orofacial myology is the assessment and treatment of oral and facial muscle function.
It looks at how the lips, tongue, jaw, and airway work together during everyday activities such as:

    • Breathing
    • Eating and drinking
    • Speaking
    • Resting posture (e.g. tongue and lips at rest)

Therapy focuses on improving these patterns through targeted exercises, functional practice, and environmental supports.

What Can It Help With?

Orofacial myology may support children who present with:

    • Mouth breathing or open mouth posture
    • Tongue thrust or low tongue resting position
    • Speech sound difficulties
    • Feeding and swallowing challenges
    • Drooling beyond expected age
    • Sleep-disordered breathing concerns
    • Dental development concerns (in collaboration with dental professionals)

Our Approach

At Day by Day, our approach is:

Child-led and engaging – therapy is playful, practical, and tailored to your child
Functional – we focus on skills that carry over into everyday life
Collaborative – we work alongside families, educators, and other professionals (e.g. dentists, orthodontists, ENTs)
Holistic – we consider the whole child, including regulation, sensory needs, and communication

We prioritise building awareness, strength, coordination, and consistency because small daily changes lead to lasting outcomes.

What to Expect

Orofacial myology therapy typically includes:

    • A comprehensive assessment of oral function and habits
    • Individualised therapy goals
    • Targeted exercises to support strength and coordination
    • Support for establishing optimal breathing and resting patterns
    • Home practice strategies to build consistency

Parent and caregiver involvement is key, and we’ll guide you every step of the way

Why It Matters

Early support for oral function can have a significant impact on a child’s:

    • Speech development
    • Feeding skills
    • Sleep quality
    • Facial and dental growth
    • Overall health and wellbeing

Addressing these patterns early helps prevent more complex challenges later on.
